ECI to Establish a New Campus of the IIIDEM The Election Commission of India (ECI) will be establishing an independent campus of the India International Institute of Democracy and Election Management (IIIDEM) at Sector-13, Dwarka, New Delhi. ECI has a requirement to train officials of the country for conducting elections of the largest democracy at different levels i.e. Parliament, State Assembly and Local Bodies. Additionally, ECI has signed MoUs with other Election Management Bodies (EMBs) of the world for exchange and training their officials in election management. Founded on 17 June 2011, the IIIDEM has been functioning from ECI's Nirvachan Sadan premises. Ever since its inception, IIIDEM has developed as a specialized international Resource Centre for capacity development of electoral personnel, both national and international, on election management and democracy. So far, the IIIDEM has conducted over 100 training programs, and has trained over 3000 participants including international electoral personnel from more than 50 countries. To fulfill the aim and vision of the institute, ECI aims to develop an independent campus of the IIIDEM. Accordingly, 5 acre land was allotted by DDA at Dwarka. The foundation stone of IIIDEM was laid by the Heads of EMBs of SAARC countries on 30 April 2012. Project details: The new campus would boast of three main blocks i.e. Institutional, Hostel and Auditorium. The institutional block will consists of training rooms (50 to 150 capacity), conference halls, library, IT centre, Museum, Computer Labs and office spaces. The hostel block comprises 100 rooms along with common facilities like dining hall, gymnasium, etc. The Government of India has approved the proposal of ECI at a total cost of Rs. 121.18 Crore. Once fully functional, IIIDEM would have 5 component wings, namely, (a) Training and Capacity Development Wing (b) Voter Education and Civic Participation Wing (c) Research, Innovation and Documentation Wing (d) International Projects and Technical Collaboration Wing (e) Services and Support Wing. The new campus would act on the immediacy of the requirement for a distinct institutional initiative on capacity building, research and knowledge management, and further promote a stronger and mature electoral culture in the country as well as globally.
