Employment Generation In Shipping Sector Maritime Agenda, for the decade 2010-20, has set an ambitious target to generate additional employment for 2.5 million persons (0.5 million direct and 2 million indirect) by 2020 in the core shipbuilding as well as the ancillary and supporting industry sector. The Sagarmala consultants have projected that the projects proposed as part of the National Perspective Plan, April 2016, will enable creation of approximately 10 million new jobs, including 4 million direct jobs in the next 10 years. As per the Statistics of Indias Ship Building and Ship Repair Industry 2014-15, the total number of employees under the eight Public Sector Shipyards was 18,568 and the total number of employees in 15 private sector shipyards was 13,053 as on 31st March 2015. As per the basic Port Statistics of India 2013-14 (as on 31st March 2014), the employment figures are 41,322 employees in Major Ports, 3,521 employees in Dock Labour Board of Major Ports and 6,027 employees in Non-Major Ports. As part of the SagarmalaProgramme which aims to promote port-led development, the Ministry of Shipping has prepared the National Perspective Plan (NPP) for the comprehensive development of the Indian maritime sector. As part of the National Perspective Plan, released in April 2016, more than 150 projects have been identified across the areas of Port Modernization & New Port Development, Port Connectivity Enhancement, Port-led Industrial Development and Coastal Community Development.
