50% Americans say US has no Iraq obligation: Poll

A new poll says that half of the American public doesn't think that the US is required to shoulder the responsibility of acting in the worsening situation in Iraq.

According to Politico, the CBS News/New York Times poll released Monday, a good number of Americans also believe that US President Barack Obama has responded appropriately to the violence in Iraq.

While forty-one percent of Americans said Obama's response to the crisis has been right, 29 percent said that he should do more and 22 percent were of the view that he should do less.

About forty-two percent of the respondents said that the US has an obligation to do something about the situation in Iraq, where militants from the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant have claimed significant territory in the northern and central part of the country.

Meanwhile, 50% of Americans said the US doesn't have an obligation to act.

US president Barack Obama last week announced that he would send 300 military advisers to Iraq, but maintained that US combat troops will not re-engage in the country.

The survey was conducted June 20-23 with 1,008 adults, the report said.
