Democrat front-runner Hillary Clinton and Republican Party's presumptive presidential nominee Donald Trump were deemed "extraordinarily unpopular" as they head into their party's conventions in July, a new poll showed.

According to the joint New York Times and CBS poll released on Friday, nearly two-thirds – 64% – of registered voters answered "no" when asked if Trump and Clinton are "honest and trustworthy", CNN reported.

Two-thirds of voters also said Trump does not share their values, while only 37% of voters said Clinton did share their values.

Out of all the registered voters, 70% said that Trump does not have the right temperament, while only 48% said that the former secretary of state had the right temperament, the poll found. However, the majority of voters said both Trump (55%) and Clinton (54%) have "strong qualities of leadership".

In the case of Democrat voters, 80% said that they were "mostly hopeful" about the future of their party. More than half – 55% – of Republican voters said that they are "mostly hopeful" about the future of their party.

The nationwide poll was conducted on smartphones and landlines between May 13-17 with 1,109 registered voters, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
