Nissan Motor Co and Renault's Chairman and Chief Executive Carlos Ghosn has taken charge as the new Chairman Elect of Mitsubishi Motors Corp, responsible for transparency and corporate governace of the scandal hit Japanese car maker.
He will not be involved in the management of the company, which would continue to be under Osamu Masuko, Mitsubishi Motors’ chief executive, revealed Ghosn today.
Mitsubishi will be now part of the Renault-Nissan Alliance and sees lots of synergies in products, platforms, even in engines and in others areas.
The synergy would help each of the alliance members to reduce the cost, said Ghosn. He added, for instance the plug in hybrid SUV technology could be used Renault and Nissan in their own version, which would bring down the cost of development of Mistubishi and cost benefits in terms of common parts. Similarly, the ProPilot autonomous drive technology of Nissan could be shared with the other alliance parters, which could bring down the cost of all these companies.
Masuko, Mitsubishi Motors’ chairman, chief executive and president, will relinquish the chairman’s title, but will continue to work on the mid term plan of the company. Nissan has asked him to continue with the company despite he want to quit, said Ghosn.
In May, Nissan said it would spend some $2 billion for a 34% stake in Mitsubishi, which hopes that it would come out with scandal hit due to falsified fuel-economy data image.
