The dollar rose in choppy trading on Monday, with an index that tracks the greenback against major currencies touching an 11-year peak.
The euro, which has been in an extended slump, had been up by as much as a third of a per cent against the dollar but surrendered gains and traded near unchanged at just under $1.12.
The yen was off 0.45 per cent at 120.07 yen to the dollar in late-morning New York trade. That marked a three-week high for the dollar against the yen.
The dollar index was last up 0.14 per cent at 95.427 after earlier going as high as 95.505, its highest since September 2003.
