A court in Bangladesh today handed down a four-year jail term to a former judge on charges of carrying a consignment of illegal drugs.
Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge of Dhaka, Ruhul Amin pronounced the verdict saying he found Javed Iqbal "guilty" of the charges and he would have to pay 10,000 Takas as penalty or serve two more months in prison in addition to his four years for possessing a contraband of the narcotic phensidyl.
Iqbal, who was the senior assistant judge of southwestern Bhola district until his arrest nine months ago, appeared in court under police custody as the verdict was delivered and he was immediately taken back to Dhaka Central Jail where he would start serving the term.
Immediately after his arrest, police had announced the judge's crime and presented him before the media.
