Diego Rodriguez, the FBI supervisor who oversaw insider-trading probes that led to dozens of convictions including that of Rajat Gupta, was named to head the bureau's New York office.
Rodriguez was head of the criminal division in New York when agents began using law-enforcement techniques previously employed against organised crime, including surveillance of targets and reliance on cooperators and informants. Under his lead, the FBI used court-approved wiretaps to record white-collar crimes as they occurred.
"We're trying to push the envelope on a daily basis," Rodriguez said in a February 2012 interview. "It's not like we've never done it before, but it's now a different target set."
Once a New York City school teacher, Rodriguez began his career at the FBI in 1990 at the New York office and was a member of a task force that worked with the New York City Police Department probing South American and Mexican drug trafficking operations, according to an agency statement.
Intelligence programmes
After a stint in the FBI's Miami office, Rodriguez transferred to headquarters in Washington, where he developed field-intelligence groups in 56 local offices, according to the statement. He also managed counterterrorism and intelligence programmes.
Rodriguez returned to New York in July 2010 and oversaw major complex financial crimes, public corruption cases and the largest arrest of Mafia members in FBI history. Since June 2012, he's been special agent in charge the criminal division of the agency's Dallas office.
Rodriguez replaces Assistant Director in Charge George Venizelos as head of the New York office. Venizelos is retiring after 24 years.
