Munich police said today that the shooter in a deadly shopping mall rampage was an 18-year-old German-Iranian man whose motive was "completely unclear".

"The perpetrator was an 18-year-old German-Iranian from Munich," police chief Hubertus Andrae told reporters after the massacre that left 10 people dead including the gunman.

"The motive or explanation for this crime is completely unclear."

Munich police said that the suspected shooter had probably acted alone and had committed suicide.

"We found a man who killed himself. We assume that he was the only shooter," police said on Twitter.

Nine people were killed in the shooting that began early yesterday evening, with 21 injured according to the latest official toll.

Earlier this week a 17-year-old Afghan refugee attacked train passengers with an axe and a knife. The teenager was shot dead by police as he tried to flee.
