Report: 9 citizens of Trinidad sought to join IS group

The government of Trinidad and Tobago is reportedly confirming that nine of its citizens will be deported from Turkey after being detained while trying to enter Syria or Iraq to join the Islamic State group.

The Trinidad and Tobago Guardian says that Attorney General Faris al-Rawi told it the nine will be under surveillance upon their return and could face criminal charges for involvement with a terrorist group. Al-Rawi could not be reached for comment by The Associated Press.

The Trinidadians were reportedly stopped by Turkish officials on July 27.

The US State Department has said that more than 70 people from Trinidad are believed to be fighting with Islamic State group and a man claiming to be Trinidadian is featured in the group's latest online magazine.
