President Donald Trump on Wednesday (IST) delivered the State of the Union address, a briefing by the President of the United States to a joint session of the United States Congress at the beginning of each calendar year in office.

The house got up to reward his speech with standing ovations a few times and chants of "USA, USA". Trump said he like the chant.

He urged the Congress to fund the safety of the country's southern borders. He said, "I welcome immigrants in the largest numbers ever, but they must come in legally.'' He mocked wealthy people who canvass for free borders but themselves live in the safety of 'guarded walls'.

In an announcement which is likely to rake up a political storm, Trump sought the Congress's approval for ban on long term abortions.

Trump said that as a result of $250 billion worth of tariffs on China, the US treasury is receiving 'billions and billions of dollars'. He said that the Nafta ( North American Free Trade Agreement) was a disaster. He stressed that his presidency has helped expedite the spirit of 'four beautiful words' -- 'Made in the USA''.

He called for collaboration on jobs, trade, infrastructure, healthcare, immigration, and foreign policy. "Victory is not winning for our party. Victory is winning for our country," Trump said.

"Millions of our fellow citizens are watching us now, gathered in this great chamber, hoping that we will govern not as two parties but as one nation.

"The agenda I will lay out this evening is not a Republican agenda or a Democrat agenda. It is the agenda of the American People," he said.

Many of the Democratic lawmakers dressed in white stood to applaud, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

"We must reject the politics of revenge, resistance and retribution - and embrace the boundless potential of cooperation, compromise and the common good," Trump said.

The overwhelming arc of Trump's speech was 'safety' of Americans being in jeopardy because of the Mexico border. He called for compromise and co-operation from the Congress to help him secure America's borders from illegal immigrants. He also claimed that a record number jobs have been created during his presidency.

He seemed unusually statesmanlike during the first few minutes of the address, refraining from potshots at critics and stayed the course during the speech that was said would be bipartsian.

Trump also talked about the progress made under his presidency in spurring women's employment. He sought money for fighting AIDS, cancer.

What Trump said:
  • In just over two years since the election, we have launched an unprecedented economic boom — a boom that has rarely been seen before
  • The Trump administration has created 600,000 jobs in manufacturing
