IPL 2018: Rohit's 94 helps Mumbai secure maiden win, Kohli's 92 in vain

This is the maiden win for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2018 after three losses. Royal Challengers Bangalore's captain Virat Kohli is the only man who looked to score runs for RCB.

Mumbai Indians managed to secure their first win of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2018)  as they moved up to the 6th spot in Vivo IPL Points table. They defeated Royal Challengers Banglore (RCB) by 46 runs. Chasing a mammoth target of 214, Virat Kohli's heroics could not save the day for RCB as no other batsman came to his aide. Krunal Pandya scalped three wickets for Mumbai Indians. Earlier Rohit Sharma scored 94 runs to help MI post a total of 213. This is the maiden win for MI in IPL 2018 after three losses. 

Earlier, after being reduced to 0-2 in the first over, Mumbai Indians had a remarkable recovery. Lewis and Rohit Sharma first built the innings and then lead the onslaught to take the team's score to 213-6 in 20 overs. Royal Challengers Banglore bowlers failed to capitalise on the launch pad provided by Umesh Yadav.

MI captain Rohit Sharma made 94 and missed a well deserved century. Evin Lewis made 65 runs.





Royal Challengers Banglore innings update: Over by over

Royal Challengers Banglore innings analysis: After end of innings

Chasing the mammoth target of 214 runs, Virat Kohli and Quinton de Kock came to open the innings for Royal Challengers Bangalore. Jasprit Bumrah came to bowl the 1st over of the innings and gave only 3 runs of the 5 balls before Kohli hit the last ball of the over for 4. Krunal Pandya came to bowl the 2nd over and Kock greeted him with a boundary over fine leg. Kohli smashed 2 fours off the Krunal’s over as RCB collected 13 runs of the Krunal’s first over. Mitchell McClenaghan came to bowl the 3rd over of the innings as he gave only 3 runs before Kohli hit four of the last ball of the over. After the end of 3 overs, RCB was 27 runs for no loss. Mustafizur Rahman came to bowl the 4th over of the and de Kock greeted him with a boundary over midwicket. De Kock hit the 5th ball of the Rahman’s over for a six. RCB collected 13 runs of the Rahman’s first over. Mitchell McClenaghan came to bowl the 5th over and bowled de Kock of the first ball and took the dangerous AB de Villiers of a short ball. de Villiers tried to pull McClenaghan and get caught at the deep square leg. Mayank Markande came to bowl the 7th over of the innings and didn’t allow Mandeep and Kohli to break free as they only scored 4 runs of his 1st over. The required run-rate was nearing 12 runs per over. Krunal came to bowl the 8th over, Mandeep while trying to take a quick single just got over the line. Krunal gave 6 runs of his second over as the RCB batsmen were unable to hit big shots. Markande came to bowl the 9th over and Kohli was unable to score off him as a youngster was bowling brilliantly. Markande just gave 5 runs in his 2nd over. A milestone for Kohli as he gone past Suresh Raina as the IPL's highest run-scorer. Krunal Pandya came to bowl the 10th over as Kohli and Mandeep were dealing in singles and Mandeep got stumped in pursue to score big runs. Mandeep Singh scored 16 runs off 14 balls. Corey Anderson came to bat and got out of a golden duck while trying to hit Krunal out of the park. After the end of the 10 overs, Royal Challengers Bangalore needed 138 runs from 60 balls with a required run rate of 13.8 runs per over.

Marakande came to bowl the 11th over and gave away 8 runs as Kohli not able to pick him. Krunal came to bowl the 12th over and took the wicket of Washington Sundar of the 3rd ball of his last over. Krunal Pandya finishes off his full quota of overs taking 3 wickets at the cost of 28 runs.  Bumrah came to bowl the 13th over and gave away 7 runs. An kishan Ishan got injured and went of the field. Kohli trying to play 20 overs to not keep net run rate go away as in IPL, net run rate plays important role at the later stage of the game. Mustafizur Rahman came to bowl the 16th over and gave away 13 runs. After the end of the 16th over RCB was 121 for 6. They needed 93 runs from 24 runs with a required run rate of 23.25.
 
McClenaghan came to bowl the  17th over and Kohli greeted him with a six over mid wicket. Kohli and Woakes collected 13 runs of the McClenaghan 3rd over. Virat Kohli was batting at 70 off 51 balls with 6 fours and 2 sixes. Bumrah came to bowl the 18th over and took the wicket of Woakes on the third ball. Umesh Yadav came to bat after the Woakes’ wicket and got out while trying to hit the ball out of the ground. Bumrah gave 3 runs in his 3rd over and took 2 wickets. Mustafizur Rahman came to bowl the 19th over and Kohli hit the first ball for six. Mustafizur gave away 18 runs in his last over. Mustafizur gave away 55 runs without taking any wicket in his full quota of overs. Bumrah bowled the last over of the match and Kohli collected 12 runs of it. As Royal Challengers Bangalore lost the game by 46 runs. Virat Kohli remained unbeaten at 92 runs off 62 balls with a strike rate of 148.38. He hit 7 fours and 4 sixes.

Mumbai Indians innings analysis: After the end of innings

Virat Kohli’s Royal Challengers won the toss and asked Mumbai Indians to bat first. Surya Kumar Yadav and Evin Lewis came to bat first. What a start for Royal Challengers Bangalore! Umesh Yadav strikes the first ball removed Surya Kumar Yadav, who scored a match-winning fifty while opening the batting, of a golden duck. Ishan Kishan came to bat after the dismissal of Surya Kumar and he cleaned him up too. Two in two for Umesh Yadav as he removed top two batsmen of Mumbai Indians, who scored the bulk of runs for MI in their previous matches. Rohit Sharma came to face the hattrick ball and he negotiated the hattrick ball. Umesh Yadav gave 3 runs and took 2 wickets in the first over of the innings. Chris, Woakes came to bowl the second over of the innings, Rohit Sharma beautifully timed the second ball for 4 in the cover region. Evin Lewis sensibly played first two balls then hit Woakes for a six over deep square for a six. Woakes gave 12 runs in his first over. After the end of the 2 overs, MI was 15 for 2. Umesh Yadav came to bowl the 3rd over of inning and strayed on the leg-side and Lewis helped to fine leg boundary. Yadav gave six runs in his 2nd over. Washington Sunder came to bowl the 4th over of the innings and hit for 3 fours of a bat and 5 runs of a wide ball. What a pathetic bowling by RCB bowler after getting 2 wickets of the first two balls they bowled miserably to give 56 runs in the 28 balls. Woakes pulled it back for RCB as he didn’t give any run in the next five balls. After the end of  6 overs, Mumbai Indians was 60 for 2 with Evin Lewis (37 runs 24 balls) and Rohit Sharma (12 runs 10 balls) on the crease.

Mohammed Siraj came to bowl the 7th over and bowled good line and length and a very good over from him as he gave only 3 runs in his 2nd over. He didn’t allow Lewis to free his hand. Sundar came to bowl the 8th over and Rohit Sharma hit the 2nd ball of the over for six over deep mid-wicket and Lewis ends the over with a four at square leg. Sundar gave away 13 runs of his 2nd over as Mumbai Indians recovered brilliantly after early blows as they keep on scoring with a run-rate of more than 9 runs per over. Yuzvendra Chahal came to bowl the 9th over of the innings and gave 3runs in his first 3 balls before slog-swept for a six over deep mid wicket boundary to complete his 50 in 32 balls. Chahal gave 9 runs in his 1st over as MI was 85 for 2 with a run rate of 9.44.

Corey Anderson came to bowl the 10th over and Rohit hit the 2nd and 3rd ball for a successive four over the covers. Anderson gave 10 runs in his first over. After the end of 10th over MI was 95 for 2 with Evin Lewis (52 runs off 35 balls) and Rohit Sharma (32 runs off 23 balls) at the crease. Chahal came to bowl the 11th over and Evin Lewis hit two successive sixes after playing 2 dot balls. Mumbai Indians was in full control of the game as they scored 13 runs of Chahal’s 2nd over. Anderson came to bowl the 12th over and dismissed dangerous Lewis who scored 65 runs off 42b (6x4s 5x6s) with a strike rate of 154.76. Corey Anderson provided the much-needed breakthrough for Royal Challengers Bangalore. Krunal Pandya came to bat after the dismissal of Lewis. Anderson gave away 6 runs in his 2nd over and took the wicket of Lewis. After the end of 12 overs MI was 114 for 3 with Rohit Sharma 38 runs off 28 balls and Krunal just came to the crease.

Chris Woakes came to bowl the 19th over and took the wicket of rusty Pollard. Hardik Pandya came to bat and given out of the first ball but DRS overturned the on-field decision and Kohli was not happy he was angry as he asked the umpire, “What is going on”. Hardik hit the next balls for a six over the deep square leg and followed with another six over mid-off. After the end of 19th over Mumbai Indians was 192 for 5.

Corey Anderson starts off with a wide. Rohit Sharma scored 14 runs off the first 4 ball before getting out at 94 runs off 52 balls with a strike rate of 180.76. He hit 10 fours and five sixes. Hardik Pandya finishes off the MI innings with a four. After the end of 20 overs, Mumbai Indians was 213 for 6. RCB to chase a mighty target of 214

Adam Milne replaces Pat Cummins in Mumbai Indians: New Zealand pacer Adam Milne has replaced injured Australian fast bowler Pat Cummins in the Mumbai Indians squad for the ongoing season of the Indian Premier League. Milne has been signed by the Mumbai Indians as a replacement for the injured Pat Cummins for the IPL 2018, a media release from the IPL said. Milne has represented New Zealand in 40 One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and 19 T20 Internationals. He was a part of the Royal Challengers Bangalore earlier. He will wear jersey no. 20 for the Mumbai Indians, it said.
 
 
How Kieron Pollard surprised media on the eve of the match: Stung by three straight defeats, Mumbai Indians' burly all-rounder Kieron Pollard sought advice from the media, asking if they could help the beleaguered outfit in effecting a turnaround in their fortunes in the Indian Premier League. "Three games in a row, we have lost in the last over. If you guys have any idea to tell us how to get over the line, if it happens again, you guys obviously know a lot of cricket, so, give us an idea of what to do," Pollard asked scribes on the eve of their match against Royal Challengers Bangalore.
