Fashion can be daunting for most but — believe it or not — it really is for everyone. Regardless of whether you are a bona fide fashionista or someone who has just begun experimenting with styles and trends, next season, make it a point to own what you wear. As we bid adieu to 2018 and usher in 2019, here is a fashion guide for people on different rungs of the fashion ladder. Don’t worry, we have you covered.
For the newbie
Your initiation into fashion will take place with an expensive trip back to the 1980s. Next season, you’ll have to invest in shiny, sequinned, disco-inspired clothes because it’s all about bling. Clothes with a retro appeal that also look futuristic will put you on top of the fashion game. Take your time to figure this one out (we’re trying to wrap our heads around this paradox, too). Make sure you buy bleached and acid-washed jeans and jackets because denim-on-denim never really goes out of fashion. If you want to be even more daring, start wearing cycling biker shorts to parties instead of treks. Why? Because it’s 2019 and anything is possible.
For the classic dresser
Just buy beige. You love your coats and jackets and you might even pass these on to your kids or grandkids. Beige is a subtle shade packed with the power to make a statement and you can create an inventory of clothes that will last you a lifetime while being trendy.
Your cotton and linen tees and pants can continue living in your wardrobe undisturbed as the Indian summer is no friend and any other material is a nightmare in our humid weather conditions. Pro tip: You might want to try out athleisure, too. Gym clothes, oddly enough, have now joined the canon of classic, anytime, anywhere dressing.
For the individualist
Men who don’t like to conform to the norm, listen up. Because 2019 is the year of lace, when lace finally sheds its sexy, feminine appeal and boldly enters masculine territory. Lace trimmings on coats and blazers may soon become a common sight, even though it sounds odd. But you’ll be making history, pretty literally: just think Louis XIV.
Take trimmings seriously. Cut up your favourite t-shirt or a battered long skirt like party streamers and see yourself make style statements on the go. Imitating your style won’t be difficult, it’ll be impossible.
For the fashionista
If you don’t know what “living coral” is, you may have a problem. Pantone, the ultimate authority on colour for the fashion industry, has declared this “animated, life-affirming shade of orange with golden undertones” the colour of the year. Stock up on this colour but do make sure you are not mistaken for a traffic cone.
Get freaky with print-on-print as global trends suggest this confusing style statement will take over more minds than the masses can handle. While floral prints imprinted themselves on almost every article of clothing last season, there’s no new evidence to suggest its downfall. But feel free to pair floral with anything. And by anything, we mean animal print, stripes, polka dots, whatever comes to your mind. Randomness and chaos, it seems, will be on display next season. Wear them proudly.
