Amul, the milk and milk products brand, owned and marketed by Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), has beaten all other Indian brands to notch the 89th position in a ‘Top 1000 Brands of Asia’ survey conducted by Campaign magazine. It is the third year in a row where Amul has featured in the top 100 of the 1,000 Asian brands covered under the survey.
However, Amul’s overall rank has slipped from 73 last year. It had improved its rank in 2010 over 2009 when it had ranked No. 83 in the survey. Nonetheless, it has retained its number one rank among all Indian brands in the list.
The July issue of Campaign, published from Hong Kong and Singapore, ranked Amul the number one Indian brand. And, the number one dairy brand, ahead of leading ones in the region like Dutch Lady, Dumex or Magnolia. Other Indian brands in the list include Kingfisher (number 116), Big Bazaar (184), ICICI Bank (215), State Bank of India (216) and Airtel (221).
The rankings were based on a consumer survey conducted in Australia, China, India, Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand. Research Agency TNS interviewed 3,322 consumers in the 15-64 years age group across the countries. Two questions were asked to determine the best brands in each of the 14 major product or service categories.
