A research reveals that 45 per cent of the 100 largest global industrial companies are obstructing climate change legislation while 95 per cent of these are members of trade associations demonstrating the obstructionist behaviour.
The research conducted by London-based non-profit InfluenceMap shows that corporate influence over climate extends beyond the activities associated with lobbying, including intervention in the public discourse on climate change science and policy via advertising, PR, social media and access to decision makers, as well as the use of influencers, such as trade associations and advocacy groups.
The research finds that almost half of the world's largest companies have recently been involved in advocating against climate policy, including BMW, BASF and Boeing. Breaking this obstructive trend, however, Unilever ranked as leaders in InfluenceMap's scoring system, supporting multiple strands of climate policy globally. This contrasts with rival Procter & Gamble, which despite its support for action on climate change, is member of BusinessEurope (recently under attack for their obstructionist stance towards climate legislation).
