Career goals and academic aspirations prompted aspiring techies to reject lucrative job offers, with annual compensation packages of over Rs 1 crore, with marquee multinational companies.

On Wednesday, during the campus placement programme at Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IIT-K), at least four students, including one woman, turned down the lucrative packages as these did not fit their plans.

IIT-K placement cell in-charge Deepu Philip confirmed this. The names of the students and the companies that made the order were not revealed, according to the policy of the premier institute.

The placement process started on December 1. Almost 1,300 students of BTech, BTech (dual) and MTech, took part in it. The process is likely to continue till the last week of December.

Of the four who rejected the offers, two settled for much lower packages of Rs 50 lakh annual compensation at smaller firms as these were more in line with their career goals and aptitude. The other two students expressed their desire to continue with their studies rather than take up jobs now.

IIT-K Department of Computer Science Professor Sumit Ganguly told Business Standard the students were always mentored to take risk on job front, when they were young.
