Consulting, e-commerce emerge top recruiters at IIM-A summer placements

Consulting and e-commerce players emerged as the top recruiters along with global investment banks in the recently concluded summer placements process at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A).

The summer internship placement process for the PGP Batch of 2013-15 at IIM-A successfully completed on November 16, 2013 following Cluster 3 of the placement process. Summer placements at IIM-A follow a cohort-cluster based approach in which firms offering similar roles are grouped into cohorts and a selected number of cohorts are invited to campus to carry out recruitment during a particular cluster.

In terms of number of offers, The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) was the top recruiter across clusters having picked 14 students from campus. Aditya Birla Group and GE were the top recruiters amongst conglomerates extending 10 offers each to students for their management leadership programs. Johnson & Johnson made eight offers to students and was the highest recruiter in the Consumer Goods and Services sector. Amazon and Infibeam were jointly the top recruiters in the technology, Internet and e-commerce sector having extended nine offers each to students.

Among global investment banks, Goldman Sachs was the highest recruiter having made 7 offers to students for roles in financial markets, investment banking and quantitative strategy. "At IIM-A, summer internships are an integral part of the PGP academic program. The successful completion of Summer Internship Placement Process 2013 is a reaffirmation of the trust reposed by recruiters in the fairness and transparency of the placement process at IIM-A and its excellent student quality," said Kirti Sharda, the Chairperson of the Placement Committee, IIM-A.

A total of over 110 firms participated in the summer placement process. Recruiters in the investment banks and BFSI sector included the likes of Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Barclays, Citibank, C.W. Downer & Co., Deutsche Bank, Espirito Santo, Goldman Sachs, HSBC, J.P. Morgan, Morgan Stanley, Nomura, Royal Bank of Scotland, Standard Chartered, UBS, Altisource-Ocwen, American Express, Axis Bank, Aviva, DBS, Dinodia Capital, MasterCard, Swiss RE and World Bank also recruited from IIM-A.

Private Equity firms such as Indus Balaji, IvyCap Ventures and Kalaari Capital hired students into their parent company for the first-time from IIM-A.

"More recruiters are increasingly looking to IIM-A for offering internships. We received positive feedback from our recruiters about the process and will continue to maintain the high standards we set for ourselves in the coming placement seasons as well," said Tanishq Goyal, Recruitment Secretary of IIM-A. Recruiters in the consulting space included global strategy consulting firms as well as niche consulting firms: Accenture, Alvarez & Marshal, Arete Advisors, A.T.Kearney, Bain & Company, Booz & Company, CEB, GEP, Feedback Ventures, Hay Group, KPMG, McKinsey & Company, Parthenon, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Roland Berger, Synergy Consulting, The Boston Consulting Group amongst others.

Among conglomerates, regular recruiters such as Aditya Birla Group, CK Birla Group, GE, Mahindra, Reliance, RPG and TAS recruited students for their flagship management leadership program.

In the Consumer Goods and Services sector, the list of recruiters included Airtel, Alshaya, Asian Paints, Coca-Cola, Dabur, GlaxoSmithKline, Hindustan Unilever, ITC, Johnson & Johnson, Mars, Mondelez, MSM, Nestle, Pepsi, Raymond, Star TV, Syngenta, Wipro amongst others.

Shell and Tata Steel offered roles for sales & marketing and operations while firms from the pharmaceutical sector such as Abbott, Boehringer Ingelheim, Cipla and Dr. Reddy’s offered roles across various functions. In the technology, Internet and e-commerce sector, the recruiters included Amazon, Cognizant, Flipkart, Google, HCL, IBM, Infibeam, Infoedge, Intel, Juniper, L&A Tech, Microsoft, Zovi amongst others.
