As continuing education for working professionals gather tremendous scope in India, institutes like the Heritage Institute of Technology in Kolkata (HIT) plans to cash in on this trend.

"We offer busy executives short MDPs (Management Development Programmes) at the Management Education Centre " a wing of HIT. These programmes help executives reskill themselves by updating their knowledge in domain areas. MDPs also help the executives acquire readymade information about present-day industry and trade," said B B Paira, director of HIT.

These courses are especially helpful when looking for a change in career. Executives at HIT not only learn about a different industry but also get to meet and interact with managers of respective industries at the college campus.

The programmes target executives from manufacturing as well as service sectors.

HIT offers Tea Estate Management and Project Management, 6 months MDP in Real Estate and Construction Management, and 1-year post-graduate course in Tea Technology for grooming managers.

The institute plans to introduce this year courses in Public Systems Management, Disaster and Crisis Management, and Tea Technology and Business Management.

The course fee range from Rs 10,000 to Rs 80,000 depending on the nature and duration of the course, with 10 to 30 students per batch, eligibility being graduation with 2 years experience.

So far, the institute has trained 12 batches with students enrolling from companies such as Sail, Procter and Gamble, Merlyn Group, Paharpur Cooling Towers, Haldia Petro Chemical, Century Cement, PS group, Bengal Ambuja Housing Development, Hindustan Copper, Bengal Shrachi Housing Development, Sunrise Projects Pvt Ltd, C B Richard Ellis, and United Consultant.

Teachers comprise both in-house faculty and executives from respective industries.

"The executives availing these courses are all sponsored by their respective companies and invariably belong to senior positions such as senior managers and vice-presidents," informed Paira.
