IIM-L plans centre for climate change

In an initiative to develop a centre of excellence focused entirely on environmental issues and their linkages to businesses, Indian Institute of Management-Lucknow (IIM-L) plans to set up a centre for climate change.
 
"Climate change is affecting lives in multiple ways and business organisations are the worst culprits. There is increasing pressure from the society on businesses to become environment-friendly.
 
The Centre for Business of Climatic Change is an important milestone in IIM-L's journey and shows our commitment to introduce management practices that address the ecosystems in which businesses function," says Devi Singh, director, IIM-L.
 
The centre aims to undertake studies and research in the areas of climate change with reference to businesses. It will undertake studies to analyse issues that Indian businesses face due to climate change and carry out research to understand risk to businesses.
 
In-depth research on emission trading and emerging concepts like green consumerism, green businesses, carbon neutrality, carbon footprints will also be carried out.
 
The centre will provide consultancy services to the corporate sector in the area of carbon markets and clean development mechanism. Training programmes will also be conducted in the areas of business of climate change.
 
"In the changed paradigm, business managers need to develop understanding and appreciation of environmental issues facing businesses. They need to be aware of environmental management strategies and how these can be used to gain long-term advantage, informed Sushil Kumar, chairman (agribusiness), IIM-L.
