IIMs meet up at Goa to discuss 'Emerging Issues in Management'

Spearheading an effort to brainstorm over the future of management education in the country, all the 13 Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) are meeting at Goa as part of a three day management conference. After the Common Admission Test (CAT) meeting sometime back, this is the second time that such a pan IIM meeting is being held.

Led by IIM Calcutta as the lead coordinator, the IIMs have organised a three-day world management conference on 'Emerging Issues in Management' at Goa during May 30 to June 1, 2013.  Inaugurated by the Union Minister for HRD, MM Pallam Raju and Minister of State, Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Shashi Tharoor, the conference saw directors, senior faculty members and seasoned facilitators of administrative staff participating in it.

According to the spokesperson of IIM Calcutta, the conference will feature discussions by the pan IIM fraternity on various issues plaguing management education in India. "Topics like firm of the future, inclusive growth, managing people, looking beyond the profits and future of management education in India are being discussed in the conference. This is the second time after CAT that the pan IIM fraternity is meeting up together," the spokesperson said.

The Ambassador of France to India Francois Richier was invited as the special guest and other prominent keynote speakers include Tharoor, Geet Sethi, World Professional Billiards Champion, Srikant M Datar, leading professor of Harvard Business School and Rafiq Gangjee, vice president, marketing and communication of Yash Raj Films.

The conference will have footfalls of around 250 individuals with mixed bag of profiles, which would include professors, researchers, doctoral students, industry professionals and alumni of various IIMs.

The occasion will offer them to have open-ended discussions on the topics of their respective domains and usher in development for future possibilities. Additionally, there will be 29 paper presentations by leading research scholars from India and abroad and 12 poster sessions by PhD scholars.

The conference will also host two panel discussions, the first one being the topic on Innovation and Inclusive Growth, which will be moderated by Rishikesh T. Krishnan of IIM Bangalore and the members of the panel include Anil K. Gupta, IIM Ahmedabad, D. Shivkumar, Head - Operations, Nokia India and Suerie Moon, Harvard Kennedy School.

The other panel would be on government and business, which will be moderated by Anup K. Sinha of IIM Calcutta and the members of the panel include Ravi Kant, Chairman-BoG, IIM Rohtak, M. Damodaran, Chairman- BoG, IIM Trichy, Hemant M. Nerurkar, MD, Tata Steel and Jawhar Sircar, CEO, Prasar Bharati, Govt. of India.

Talking about the conference, Ashok Banerjee, Dean of New Initiatives and External Relations of IIM Calcutta and the Programme Chair of the conference said, "IIMs have started the experiment of jointly organizing conference with India Finance Conference hosted by IIM Calcutta, IIM Bangalore and IIM Ahmedabad two years back. This time it is all thirteen IIMs coming together – it is a great experience and challenging too."
