Recognising the need for trained and skilled personnel in the Rs 2,58,000 crore logistics industry, JK Business school from the JK group of companies, has drafted a three-month course in collaboration with Logistics Plus Pvt Ltd.

The programme is targeted at front and back office personnel at the entry and supervisory levels in freight forwarding companies, export-import companies, inland container depots, container freight stations, shipping, airlines, transport companies, custom house agents, clearing and others.

The course will cover physical movement of goods including rail, road, air, shipping transportation, associated documentation and fund movements. In addition to that an overview of World Trade Organisation (WTO), its implication, supply- chain concepts and others, is also a part of the course.

"This course is offered only in international Business schools (B-schools). At present, the awareness for such a course is still not adequate. Traditionally, people in this industry are trained on the job and are generally typecast in a particular job. Through this programme, we are trying to give them 360-degree exposure," S L Ganpati, managing director, Logistics plus, said.

"Studies by Planning Commission, the Government of India and KPMG-Confederation of Indian industry (CII) confirm the fact that this industry suffers from the lack of trained manpower," said Reena Ramachandran, director-general, JK Business School.

According to the CII- KPMG study, Currently, the number of warehouse managers in the organised sector is estimated to be around 14,000 which will grow up to around 35,000 by 2015, Ramachandran said.

Similarly, the number of existing managerial, executive or engineer workforce currently stands at 31,488 which is likely to be between 56,000 " 64,000 over the next five years, Ramachandran added.

"This course will help the participants enhance their knowledge and make them eligible for horizontal job rotation. This will also prepare them for supervisory or managerial position in future. There is a lack of technical inputs to these people, which causes customer coordination and productivity to suffer," Ramachandran said.
