India’s current annual consumption of design services is estimated at Rs 3,400 crore. This is expected to grow to Rs 12,300 crore in the next five years.
India currently trains around 1,000 design professionals every year against a requirement of 7,000 to 8,000.
Although a few design institutes have come up across the country in the last decade, the supply of design professionals will outstrip the demand.
While the US, Western Europe, Japan and South Korea are leading players, India can make it if adequate attention is provided.
Human computer interface, consumer durables and IT (CDIT) and automobile design will lead the growth.
Courses in design management and strategic design are merging a design school with a B-school.
