Asia may soon have competitions for promoting young managerial talent. As the council of the Asian Association of Management Organisations (AAMO) met in Mumbai earlier this month, this was one of the points that got a consensus.

The meeting was attended by heads and representatives of national management organisations from several AAMO member countries in the Asia Pacific Region, including India, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Macau, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Japan.

The meeting also arrived at a decision to increase the portfolio of AAMO activities, so that large numbers of professional managers in the region get an opportunity to interact with each other.

These activities will include competitions for young managers, exchange of managers for projects in other countries and publishing a quarterly journal called the Asian Business Review.

Soft focus

Kiran Karnik, president, National Association of Software and Services Companies (Nasscom) was the chief guest at the convocation ceremony for the 2005 batch at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Kozhikode.

In his convocation address, Karnik stressed the importance of retaining and harnessing intellectual capital and the need for industry-academia partnership to drive growth.

He emphasised the need for future managers to be willing learners and team players. Innovation, change management and ethics were some other topics that he asked the graduating students to ponder about and to apply in their professional life.

The occasion where 116 students of the post graduate programme (PGP) in management received their diplomas was also attended by the institute's chairman A C Muthiah.

Risk reward

The Centre of International Business (CIB), at the Amity Business School, Noida has entered into a collaboration agreement with the University of East London (UEL).

The agreement is to establish the Amity Centre for Risk Management and Governance to promote the study, research and implementation of various aspects of risk management and governance including financial, operating, and physical risks.

Apart from joint research projects, case studies and exchanging information regarding possible areas of research, other plans include facilitating staff and student exchanges.
