This summer, 66 students out of a total of 245 are doing their internship overseas, which was 53 from a total of 249 students last year.

In terms of percentage, last year it was 21.3 per cent which has gone up to 27 per cent this year.

In countrywise distribution the number of students opting for US was eight per cent and 12 per cent went to firms in Asia and Europe respectively.

In 2005, only four per cent were in US while the Asian and European figures were 7.2 and 11.1 per cent respectively.

Students undergo eight to ten weeks of training with top companies in the country and abroad.

Based on their performance in their internship, students are also offered jobs known as pre placement offers (PPO).

More than 80 companies participated in last year's summer placement.

It is also interesting to note that two of the three students who had received the institutes record breaking highest pay package of $ 1,85,000, both overseas postings, were PPO.

A total of 31, 28 PPO and three pre placement interviews were made to students

"Companies usually give job offers on the basis of the performance of the students in their stint at the company," a placement cell official said.

The increase overseas ventures is a healthy sign for the institute as it signifies further acceptance of the institutes in overseas companies.

"Many foreign companies who have Indian operations take students as interns as they can be later placed in the country," Piyush Sinha, placement head IIMA told Business Standard.

"Similarly, many Indian companies who have overseas operations also take students as interns," he added.

However, he added that the trend signifies the acceptance of the Institute overseas which is also reflected in the increase in the number of international job offers made and their acceptance.
