The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT), the must-cross hurdle for aspiring B-school students will now have a new score-recipient code, specific to a programme instead of an institution.

The new system will be introduced form January 1, 2006. India has reported a 12 per cent rise in the number of tests taken in January compared with that of January 2004.

The US-based Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) which supervises GMAT the world over, expects a surge in the number of the GMAT aspirants in the next few years with the new coding system being "friendlier" and "easier".

"To provide new score-recipient codes to all programmes in all B-schools in April, the council needs to make sure that they can be assigned and received by the B-schools in time so that they can benefit fully from the enhanced GMAT customer service. The new codes are key to bringing more valuable, programme-specific marketing information, and if some B-schools continue to use the old codes even after January 1, 2006, the present codes of those B-schools will be applicable to ensure that no GMAT scores go astray," a spokesperson of the council said in response to an e-mail from Business Standard.

The spokesperson said the new system would allow the Council to capture information at the programme level in order to provide more detailed information about where the GMAT scores were sent and by whom.

"In addition to this, the schools would be able to understand better what score reports the other programmes of the same schools are getting," the spokesperson said. Meanwhile, during January this year, 12,210 tests were taken only in the US against 11,578 in January 2004.
