Since its debut in 2008, IPL has been synonymous with controversy. Every season has seen its fair share of dubious deals and criticism. Yet, it has survived. The recent Supreme Court judgement is the harshest indictment of the league thus far. Here is what is at stake
  • The BCCI gets around Rs 750 crore from the broadcaster Multi Screen Media for telecast rights in the Indian subcontinent
  • In 2015 Star India had global digital telecast rights (except USA) and broadcast rights for territories other than Indian subcontinent and USA for Rs 100 crore per year
  • Approximately Rs 480 crore is earned in terms of franchise fees
  • About Rs 200 crore comes in the form of on-ground advertising and sponsorship. Pepsi leads the chart; it pays around Rs 80 crore a year for title sponsorship rights
  • The franchises make around Rs 350 crore in sponsorship and in-stadia advertising revenues

WHAT BCCI COULD DO:
  1. Drop the 2016 edition of IPL and get things in order. Contracts with various stakeholders prevent the tournament from being dropped for more than a year at a go
  2. Hold the tournament with six teams instead of eight
  3. Re-auction the teams from Chennai and Jaipur
  4. Let the two teams take a break from IPL. The players would then be released into the auction pool. Two new teams can come in, which can continue even after the ban on CSK and RR is lifted, since the IPL contracts provide for a 10-team tournament.
