Dear Students,
LAST WEEK WE ASKED: Do you think students should take up summer internships even if they do not get stipend for the same?
BEST RESPONSE
Summer internships are required to provide student a real-time working atmosphere of corporate industry. Enormous debts faced by nearly every sector is leading to non-payment of salaries for months, wage cuts, no hikes and shelving off enough work force. So it is very necessary for the intern/trainee to be flexible enough with a congenial attitude towards work and an acceptance to work even in the grave market situations. So even a bit of an opportunity to get an exposure into corporate world must be opted at hand.

Summer internships help students get hands-on practical experience. And if the learning is better and desirable, then the stipend (or the lack of it) is hardly a motivation to take up the summer internship.

Students take admission in B-schools in order to bridge the gap between themselves as graduate and a person ready for job industry. The summer internships as part of an MBA curriculum is that tool that gives students a practical experience of work environment. Thus, students should obviously take up summer internships irrespective of any stipend because they are in their learning process. And summer internship has a much more important role in their career for the placement process than the amount received as stipend.

Actual learning happens outside the classroom. Intern should focus on their learning that he/she get from an organisation rather than focusing on paid or unpaid internship. An internship is a great way to get an inside glimpse of a company, an industry, and a particular occupation. It can help to discover if the career you are considering is right (or wrong) for you. Internships often turn into job offers but the probability for the same is low but not difficult. It is the first impression you make on who may be a future employer.

An internship is an opportunity to integrate career related experience into an education by participating in planned, supervised work. At internship students learn practical concepts and earn experience that is life time. Here, students have to apply his theoretical concepts and this is the learning where students have to balance concepts with practical work. Internship is an investment for students and in investment everyone have has to wait for perfect time of return. Stipend is just for period of an internship not more than that so students also focus on internship not for stipend.

Summer internships are meant for industrial exposure for students prior to completion of courses. Stipend is given for compensating the little expenses and a tribute to the student's hard work. Students should see the benefit of training rather then stipend, which is nothing in comparison to knowledge they will get. They should learn as much they can in this time and get best out of it. So a small stipend during this time does not matter at all.

What more does a student need than working with white collar men. It gives a real world experience, makes one think 'out of box', develops personal work ethics, makes it able to investigate ones career interest and prospective career goals. An internship also facilitates the development of professional contacts. Moreover, it facilitates the students with work experience. The internship is vital and its proper utilisation would reimburse a student more money in the future than what one would receive as a stipend.

A student must make the most of internship by enhancing interpersonal communication and teamwork skills above technical aptitude so as to make it as a cumulating experience. Internships give a feel of career opportunities and lay the foundation for career planning. Besides, internship performance counts heavily during placements. A good performance in internship fetches higher academic credentials. Internship provides firsthand experience into company environment, business processes and markets. Student must consider all these factors while deciding their summer internship and not the compensation during it.

I think students should take up internships irrespective of stipend because of three reasons. One, they are an excellent and easy way of getting hands-on experience of the corporate world - an essential for someone who is about to embark on a chosen career path. Two, internships can be a deciding factor in choosing the type of job a student would like to do in the future, as the work done during the internship can help gauge self-interests and capabilities. Three, internships can be great value additions to CVs.

Summer Internships (SI) are a part of practical learning students go through as it gives a wide experience, practical knowledge, confidence, corporate sense and a lot more. Hence, if a company doesn't pays stipend, students should see the positive points which gives them non-monetary benefits. SI offer benefits to both the parties as one has work and other has to get the work done. Opting for SI that doesn't gives stipend should let student concentrate on the core work of internship and not on money.

Summer internships are not an earning stage for students. It is all about learning and gaining valuable work experience which one can't get in the classroom. Internships are generally short-term which test students' future career without committing. If students are looking to get stipend, they won't focus on getting properly trained in the companies even while the firms focus on the former's work efficiency and look to make them work and recover the stipend paid.

Summer Internship is a part of learning process and a way to see the industry before deciding on a career path. Its main objective is not earning money, rather its an opportunity for fresh graduates to brush up their classroom knowledge by getting a first hand experience. Hence, for summer internship students should focus more on getting a good mentor and a dynamic organisation, so that the valuable experience they earn will help them build a strong resume which can certify their future growth.
- Satabdi Ghose Roy, Indian Institute Of Social Welfare And Business Management.
Students should take up summer internship even if they do not get the stipend. It is the exposure that the students get in solving the practical problem and getting exposure in facing organisational hindrances. The stipend will be immaterial if the students get a full grip over solving the practical problems of the going concerns in the corporate world. On the contrary, the students should think of getting placed directly in the company instead of wishing for the stipend. Hence thinking for long term will be better than hoping for income for short term.

Summer internship provides students personal and professional growth while working with an organisation. Students get live projects that give them learning opportunity and also contribute to business process. Students get exposure in almost all the verticals of the company. Different stages in assessment of projects by company guide and faculty guide helps students to realize real world scenario. Thus without worrying about the stipend, one must focus on the practical exposure which will help students to gain industry experience.

Summer internships provide a valuable experience and exposure to the students in the real-world organisational set-up. Students get a holistic insight of the working of an organization, something which can not be substituted by classroom learning. The internship period also gives students the opportunity to apply their classroom knowledge in a real-world setting . These benefits are instrumental in the professional and personal growth of students, and the absence of stipend should not be a deterrent in taking summer internships.
- Akshay Chadha, NSIT, Delhi.
Students should take up summer internships as it provides an excellent opportunity to 'learn by experience'. Rubbing shoulders with functional experts amidst clanking machines provides an exciting learning experience that simply is inimitable in classrooms. MBA is not a theoretical course and what is taught in the classrooms is actually practiced in the business. If so, should we not have the opportunity to 'see' it being practiced? There is so much to be gained through summer internship, regardless of stipend.
- V Dharmaraj, Faculty of Management, EBET Group of Institutions, Kangayam.
Summer internships are a golden chance for the B-school students to learn the practicality of the industry and so the prime focus of the students should be on the quality of projects being offered and not just on stipend. The trend of getting hefty stipends promotes the thought that students are treated as an employee while the two months should be seen more in terms of industry exposure. Its better to consult your seniors and access the project before jumping on just for the sake of company's name on your resume even if it offers no stipend.
