LAST WEEK WE ASKED: India has again slipped the QS Asian University rankings for 2012. Do you think its a matter of concern or should Indian universities write it off saying the criterion used for ranking does not fit them?

It would be quite wrong on part of the Indian universities in considering themselves inadequate for the criterion used for ranking. The universities are assessed on the basic parameters but institutes in India happen to fall back on the scale of international faculty and international students. Thus, the veritable solution lies in improving upon their stature instead of being querulous about selection criteria.

The core reason for only four colleges from India making into QS Asian University rankings this year is the very low percentage of international faculty teaching at Indian universities. Yet, this criteria totally misfits the Indian scenario as the country is already having world renowned faculty teaching them. So, it is better to focus on providing excellence in quality, than looking too much into rankings.

QS rating system's criteria are the building blocks on the basis of which pyramid of a successful university is laid down.The universities which excel in these criteria are awarded with a rating of one to five stars. The Indian ranking reflects the current education system in the country and compare it with the universities across the Asia. A slip in the ranking is a alarming signal and the Indian universities should escalate themselves otherwise the image of education system in India will get dimmed in the near future.

The Indian higher education is in great mess so we should not just write off the QS Asian University rankings for 2012 but take it seriously enough to introspect within ourselves and must look to improve our higher education. Besides, to reap the benefit of demographic dividend the quality of higher education must meet the global standard as quality higher education produces employable youth.
