Dear Students,
LAST WEEK WE ASKED: Do you think there should be an IIM Council for the IIMs on the similar lines as the IIT Council? Do you think it will challenge their autonomy?
BEST RESPONSE
It would be simple baloney to consider a council for governing the several IIMs. Although IIMs operate individually yet they are completely unified in their objective. The mere difference being each of them serving different parts of one country and with that different ideologies tend to be formed for the respective IIMs. But as far as governance is concerned, when IIMs have largely been successful in working on their own terms then there seems to appear no cause distracting their motives. As setting up an IIM council will mean imposing uniform standards with an end result impeding their purpose.

The IIT council is formed to keep a check on the various functional aspects like setting of fee structure, entrance exam procedures and review of the working of IITs every year. IIMs have already been doing meticulously well on these lines, generating revenues of their own and through various corporates and alumni contacts, successfully conducting online entrance second year in a row and making its mark on various academic fields all round the world. The setting up of IIM council may unnecessary hinder their working procedure and challenge their autonomy.

All the IIMs are at different stages of growth and each one has created a niche for themselves. In all there are 13 IIMs and if the council is formed, the decision will bind all the institutes and outcome will be very rigid. A council like the IIT may try and impose uniform standards through a collective decision and that could be a problem. If the council is formed it could harm the autonomy and flexibility enjoyed by IIMs. The council formed will be controlled by the council members and it could even harm the institute as a whole.

IIMs need to have a council on the same lines as IIT. Rather this being a challenge to their autonomy, it can be seen as a transparent & open system for all to see & adhere. The council for the entire students across India so that deserving candidates are not left behind in official rigmarole & rich may differ across IIMs.

The IIMs should have a council of their own just as the IITs, which will govern all the 13 IIM institutes. This council shall constitute of various representatives of the respective IIM institutes alongwith their alumni which will help IIM's in their overall growth and development of the infrastructure, their academics, etc. And overcome problems faced if any.

IIMs are way ahead in imparting management education mainly because of their autonomy. IIMs readily modify their syllabus as per industry need because they are autonomous. once IIMs will form council their autonomy will be hampered and they will loose their relevance. In management education more than any other course dynamism is required hence the need of autonomy. Thus IIMs require more of autonomy then any regulatory measure so as to have world class institution.
