Dear Students,
LAST WEEK WE ASKED: Do you think AICTE could help better management education in the country?
BEST RESPONSE
The transformation from conventional to professional orientation of education has necessitated a technical monitoring body like AICTE. Both AICTE and UGC should go together for better education and recognition at national and international levels. Education is the future investment and guides the posterity. Hence, AICTE can play a pivotal role in development of management and technical education in India. However, government should enforce suitable measures for their clean and efficient running according to the changing demands of higher or technical education and solve the ongoing problems without adversely affecting the system rather than creating new problems.
OTHER RESPONSES
By implementing the norms made by All India Council for Technical Education, they can help improve management education in the country.Yearly compliances of B-schools facilitates to maintain standard and rectify shortcomings.Autonomy in deciding the curriculum and the fees to private B-schools will not help because they will have their own standards.Common Management Admission Test conducted by All India Council for Technical Education is also a good trend to maintain a common standard for admission.
The role of AICTE is to regulate and facilitate the development of management education in the country but it seems that it is inclined more towards regulatory role but AICTE could certainly help better management education but for that there has to be a proper balance of regulation and development role played by AICTE. They should provide facilities for enhancing the quality of management curriculum and research by faculties and at the same time they should act as bridge between corporate and B schools so from time to time the changing needs of corporate can be incorporated in the curriculum.
As far as its role is concerned, AICTE should facilitate operations of Harvard, Stanford etc in India, which was never encouraged by AICTE. They will bring in standards, systems and procedures for a clean and world class education. AICTE is responsible for the down fall of technical education in this country. Education must be all simple and world-class.
AICTE can ameliorate management education in many ways. Firstly, its board of stakeholder should represent students, government representatives, luminaries in management from India and abroad. Secondly, AICTE should bring innovation in the education system by understanding management education abroad and giving it Indian colour. Thirdly, AICTE should always keep student interest at the top and must strive to make education system more student friendly and practical. Fourthly, AICTE must act as a good moderator between student and management institution. Lastly, It must maintain fine balance between accountability and autonomy.
AICTE is regulatory body that issues guidelines for and controls the technical and management institutes. AICTE set a standard of certain parameters, like infrastructure, Faculty, R&D facility etc to be met for getting approvals and affiliations of colleges and number of seats also. If you take a look then most b-schools in the country with the exception of the IIMs are run by private players and they compromise with the quality education for their profit that’s why standard of education is declining . Thus to improve management education AICTE should must be strict .
Quality education is a means to judge the economic progress of a country. All India Council for technical education (AICTE) does a commendable job by undertaking periodic review of the curriculum and subject. This is done to ensure that they are up to date and not outmoded or obsolete. Thus it effectively fulfills the technological requirements of the country. There are instances in the past that if a college is not following the guidelines, then the rights were revoked. Hence, it could be said that AICTE could help better management education in the country.
AICTE being a governing body for technical education has sufficient privileges to influence the management education. At present, the finest of management education is limited to top rung B-schools only. There is a need to bring tier 2 or 3 institutes at the same level. This is where AICTE can play crucial role so that growing strength of management aspirants could be served. AICTE could mentor such institutes in upgrading the quality of education being imparted helping them focus on enhancing practical skills. These efforts will surely drive the change thereby propelling the stature of management education in the country.
A Supreme court ruling on April 25 has taken away MBA from government and other deemed universities away from the purview of the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE). This verdict could significantly impact the quality of management education imparted in the country. There is a strong 'lobby' of non AICTE approved colleges mushrooming in every nook and corner of the country. This intensifies the need for a regulatory body which can set minimum guidelines to be followed by every institute. The value of the MBA degree would be diluted in the absence of an AICTE approval.
AICTE is today proud as an educational body but these body faces constraints when it comes to execution of power while dealing different situations. The standards set by AICTE are of very high in nature ,which demands high education standards from the management institutions in order to qualify and receive AICTE approved certificate from the AICTE. These certificate ensures the management institutions had met higher standards and will be able to deliver management education to the best level in compare to those institutes who doesn’t possess these certificate. Thus AICTE could help improve overall dynamism of management education.
I don’t think AICTE could help in developing better management education. So far the role of the AICTE had been like regulator rather than facilitator. The role of AICTE should be only of advisory nature and they should only provide recommendations to the UGC. AICTE enforces colleges to come out with mandatory disclosure documents, but a regulatory body doesn't make sure that quality of education is rising. AICTE is mainly for technical education, MBA program can’t be defined as technical programs. Hence AICTE is not authorized to set standards as Parliament had already enacted UGC Act for the same.
