Dear Students,
LAST WEEK WE ASKED: Do you think an external peer review and accreditation of IITs will help better their performance?
BEST RESPONSE
IITs are well-known and established institutes, but that can be the cause of complacency in the future. External peer review and accreditation brings in the most vital element: Transparency. Also, it shall ensure that the premier institutes continually work towards building a better learning environment, which shall indirectly help them in re-branding themselves. With this, the IITs can easily seek aspiring students from across the globe, and gain a firm ranking among the best institutes in the world. Moreover, this shall help India meet the requirements of Washington Accord, which, it is keen to join.
OTHER RESPONSES
Yes,external peer review and accreditation will help IITs better their performance. Meritorious and extremely hard working students get admissions in IITs.They deserve accreditation.Because of accreditation, the IIT graduates will get more opportunities.
Yes, it will improve the performance of IITs. Accreditation gives college an idea where they stand and how they can improve on their weaknesses. Colleges and accredated institutions work together to overcome weaknesses and set benchmarking criteria. They also helps to evaluate on those criteria periodically.
External review or accreditation will infuse more internal competition amongst the IITs only whereas IITs are known as closely knitted and bonded institutes. IITs are not just institutes but are the pride of the nation. Being autonomous, IITs will always be the favourite place for entrepreneurs to grow and for companies to fight for Zero Day placements. Just like any other entity, academic institutes have gestation periods and similarly newer IITs will shine over a period of time and IITs will make sure to be the first in line in being most competitive institutes in the World to get into.
People are so quick to judge others faults than their owns" and it is generally accepted human nature/ fact. This statement clearly reveals that external review findings will be more transparent than internal reviews. Peer review/ external review, which will be more stringent and can pull out the facts and quality standards, which identifies the areas of performance improvisation and to prepare an action plan to meet international standards.
IIT's are already ranked higher in all the reputed national surveys and reviews. IIT's fail to make a mark in the international rankings such as QS or Times because of the kind of mandate they have i.e. an excelling technological institute of national importance whereas these Int'l rankings take into account the diversity of courses, foreign students and faculty which is not possible at IIT's due to their structure. Having said that there is a need to improve research work at IIT's which seems to be the biggest flaw in their working.
In the current situation, IITs need to upgrade their standard of teaching and imparting knowledge, so that students can effectively compete in today’s business transformation and be a part of success story. It is mandatory to provide externally focused curriculum to students so that they can help in driving innovation and growth in pursuit of business goals. It will help students to foresee their future with candid expectations in India and abroad. However, an external peer review and accreditation of IITs will not make any big difference.
Although IITs offer top-notch education yet they perform dismally in worldwide ratings. Accreditation will help IITs improve their global brand and raise performance standards but only when their performance assessment is indeed independent and not internal as proposed. Aligning performance measures with special emphasis on research on national development goals such as defence, manufacturing, urban development will raise the bar and will leapfrog IITs to amongst the top in the world and most importantly will help India in technological advancements. The success expected from NBA accreditation will be truly realized by a robust performance management system and impartial external review.
Although IITs excel in outstanding quality education but none of them have made it to the global top 200 institutes. This is mainly due to the shortcomings on worldwide scale which push them back on the list. The premium institutes tend to falter on parameters like high student to faculty ratios, lack of research and low levels of international diversity. Instead of an external peer review or accreditation, action in right direction will yield an improved performance. Such as research is something in which efforts can reap benefits by giving the IITs a platform to raise themselves globally.
