Dear Students,
LAST WEEK WE ASKED: Do you think IIMs should accredit other B-schools?
BEST RESPONSE
A B-school accrediting other B-schools would affect its independency and generate controversies. Alternative is MHRD must focus its efforts to set up an special committee consisting of competent members, which will independently concentrate and make concrete efforts to guide all B-schools (including IIMs) and address all research related issues, motivate & thoroughly develop, in all aspects, the country and its B-schools on global footings and carry out accreditation job too. It must be nationally recognized and empowered to draft & demand incentive schemes & resources for breeding high research work.
OTHER RESPONSES
As the standards of IIMs are better, they may compare standards of other B-schools with their own. They may ask other institutes to improve wherever required. Based on the assessment, IIMs may think of upgrading other institutes in future.
Accreditation by IIMs will be a sense of achievement for other B-Schools which will help them to improve their programmes, quality of research etc, but it should be taken into notice that this will surely damage IIMs Brand as students crave to go to the institution because of the brand and surely this brand also brings in a lot of global attention to India. Hence if there is dilution of this brand by accrediting other institutes it surely will affect the credibility of the brand. To improve the quality of programmes of other B-Schools, India might lose its premier B-school.
The idea of accreditation is a positive one in the changing times of need as pooling of resources will definitely enhance the quality of private B-schools, especially in the very thirsty area of research, across the country. The outcome of such a process would truly measure over a period of time the employability of students passing out from different business schools. The concern is if IIMs cannot help their peers i.e. the new IIMs, how would they help other private B-schools which creates a doubt that whether there will be a concerted effort or not.
IIMs are an institution to provide quality Management education. In recent times they are entrusted to provide quality research. IIMs are struggling hard in both with a dismal performance in research field. If it will be entrusted with one more cumbersome task it will succumb to the pressure. What can be done is to recruit more Retired professor from IIMs in the accreditation agency like UGC, AICET etc. In this way there can be more transparency and accountability in accreditation of B-schools.
Accreditation shouldn't just involve recognition from trusted organization and providing grades on a scale but also mentor B-schools. IIMs being one of the best B-schools not necessarily possess the sufficiency to accredit other institutes. Actually in correct terms, accreditation should be carried out properly by some governing body rather than by any of the phenomenal institutes. Accreditation requires assessment of the present status of institutes on parameters like infrastructure, placement and most importantly research work. Considering the shortcomings and working towards them would be most effective measure to enhance quality of B-schools and improve India's overall ranking in management studies.
The word 'accredit' is a vicious word in itself as proposed by the MHRD. Important is one should do charity, when one is capable of doing it. Currently, 13 IIM institutes are existing out of which only a few have their names shining, others are still toiling , thereby making other B schools share the limelight under the camouflaged umbrella is just a matter of sharing names not competencies & resources. Rather B schools themselves have added freedom to get accredited under prestigious bodies. So IIMs should not decide on taking this journey.
New IIMs faces their own problems if older IIMs take this responsibility to accredit other Indian B-schools it helps to promotes better management research in the country. This IIMs could generate additional revenue through this mechanism, and it also helps to reduce the load of the AICTE and the UGC. If old IIMs do this it helps to improves research work, facility and infrastructure and it also helps to up our global ranking not only at an institute-level but also as a country in management education.
Mere accreditation is not enough to uplift the standards of any institution. In case of IIMs a legacy of providing the finest of education has been established which is instrumental for their phenomenal success. To replicate that similar model same infrastructure, ideal curriculum and best administration is required which IIMs can provide to other B-schools by mentoring them.
The quality of MBA education will increase with colleges competing to get accreditation from IIM's. Good job profiles could be offered, especially for placements abroad. IIM accredited colleges could be a good option against foreign education. Indian journal recognition in other countries will increase because of the IIM stamp. But the accreditation process has a potential for corruption. In trying to get accreditation colleges will try to ape the IIMs course structure and limit the potential to go beyond. IIM accredited college seem to be an attractive shadow of the IIMs.
