LAST WEEK WE ASKED:  Do you think some good B-schools should be declared centre of excellence in management?

Declaring good B-schools as center of excellence will boost their enthusiasm but that may put a brake on their growth process too. Another aspect is other B-schools will either get stimulated to reach that level or exacerbate and disappoint them as they aren't amongst the excellent and might create controversy. Alternative is to organize 'B-school Excellency Awards' which will recognize the best and give all schools a fillip to compete and improvise themselves, rather than titling some schools as excellent on permanent basis. Accrediting B-schools is also a way out for appreciation.

Those B-schools who are doing well may be declared as centre of excellence in management.That is these B-schools are good in terms of research activities conducted by faculty members.Also the results of the students are excellent and there is 100 percent placement for students.These B-schools may be few but they are the B-schools where students prefer to go.Declaring them as centre of excellence may be appreciation for these few selected B-schools.

Reputed B-Schools should be declared as Centre of Excellence (CoE) for that particular thing as it will provide leadership, evangelization, best practices, research, support and/or training for a focus area that will definitely create value by distributing knowledge to India’s business community as well as it will bring knowledge to life by attracting and collaborating with internationally known researchers and practitioners. CoE can also be created by a network of institutions collaborating with each other to pursue excellence in a particular area of research. Such a center may bring together faculty members from different disciplines and provide shared facilities.

The very idea of granting some good B-schools with the status of centre of excellence in management sounds pretty good. It serves a dual purpose of acclaiming the performance of the ones putting sincere efforts in upgrading the educational standards along with urging other institutes to achieve such destination par excellence. This results in a synergistic effort in uplifting the educational standards in India. Moreover, it inculcates a sense of responsibility among the recipients which contributes to Indian B-schools being nothing short of the so called international B-schools. It is equally important not to be lavish on such terms also.

B-schools can be declared as centres for excellence as long as they are able to provide the competitive edge, not only to the students but also to the researchers, executives and in turn to the society. In this knowledge driven world there should be innovative measures adopted to strike a balance with the current trend. The centres should provide such learning that it can be put to immediate use in the practical world with remarkable performance. In this way both the b-schools and associates will be mutually rewarded.

Declaring some good B-Schools as centre of excellence in management is good process however it should be taken into consideration that there should not be any deviation in the quality of education as most of the so-called good B-Schools after gaining some name or autonomy have have proved themselves to be disastrous. Hence if some B-Schools have to separated from the rest of the B-Schools by this process due care should be taken to keep a check on it

Good B-schools which imparts quality education and provides proper resources, training facilities, scholarship schemes, high campus placements as well as global exposures and other facilities should be declared centres of excellence in management. Not only this, it would also help other B-schools as well as newly opened B-schools to improve and motivate themselves and at the same time gain ideas from good B-schools to raise their own standards so as to encourage more and more students to get better employment opportunities and improve the standard of the society.

B-schools number in thousands but a few of them seem to be phenomenal. Obviously, there exist a section of good B-schools with major feat under their ambit. So there seems to appear no apparent reason in hesitating to declare such B-schools as center of excellence. It is necessary that these institutes are vaunted as a proactive measure empowering them to become part of crème de la crème. This will stimulate similar institutes towards putting best possible efforts for synonymous outcome. Such a measure with viable growth of countrywide management education is categorically a welcome move.

If a good B-school is declared as a centre of excellence, it becomes a great asset for students, faculties and also to the B-school itself. It enhances, therefore, its repute in the market.

A centre of excellence refers to a team, a shared facility or an entity that provides leadership, evangelization, best practices, research, support or training for a focus area. Hence, a good B-Schools must be declared centre of excellence. But it should not be a permanent affair. Rather it could be for certain period of time, say 4-5 years. This would prevent the colleges from being complacent. Therefore, a management should be set up to check whether it could be continued to be a 'centre of excellence' in future too.
