Dear Students,

LAST WEEK WE ASKED: Do you think higher education institutes in India need to improve their global repute?

BEST RESPONSE

More From This Section

Improving the quality of higher education to the global benchmarks should be a national mission since it will determine the future of our country. Too many of Indian universities have simply not kept abreast with changes that have taken place around us and are still producing graduates in subjects that the global job market no longer requires or not able to create a world class entrepreneur breed. Contributions to intellectual property and quality of research publications should be brought up to match global standards. They fared well in the engineering subjects, but lagged behind in arts and languages stream.

- Sourabh Jamer, The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, Mumbai.

OTHER RESPONSES

All education institutes of global repute have some common strengths like industry relevant curriculum, industry experts to teach, high motivation for students to pursue research & development, constant faculty development in terms of their knowledge and skills, teaching of employability aspects to students, value additions to students in terms of building personality, confidence and soft skills. If these things are done and allowed through flexibility given to institutes, then Indian institutes surely can become of global repute.
- Anand Wadadekar, Samvit School of Infrastructure Business, Pune.

There is a greater need for higher education institutes in India to carefully assess and improve the parameters taken into consideration by the rating agencies while stressing the need for accountability. Lesser governmental interference and better incentives to staff combined with greater tax rebates attract the talent who are otherwise going for employment and which further inculcates productive environment.
- Amarnath Pranav Chandra, The Institute Of Chartered Accountants & Company Secretaries Of India, Hyderabad.

A well placed global reputation of an institute attracts worldwide attention and desire to be associated with the institute. A remarkable research base, top quality pedagogy and excellent student profile are some of the factors which differentiate a top class institute from others. Being the only BRIC nation absent from the list of top 100 prestigious universities, it is essential for Indian higher education institutes to improve their global repute. A better educational reputation will certainly intimidate others and establish a reputation for India by clearing the stains of being called an underachiever.
- Garima Nanda, Birla Institute of Management Technology, Greater Noida.

Higher education institutes in India need to improve their global repute as the list acts as a 'helm' to the students across the globe to choose their universities. Though the institutions like IITs and IISc are top ranked in India, they fall behind to compete with other universities in the world, especially in terms of reputation. Indian universities should begin with openness and willingness to share data and need to work other strategies so that they could catch-up on these rankings in the next 3-5 years and to match themselves in the BRIC circuit.
- Vinod Ram, Tumkur University, Karnataka.

It is very unfortunate that no higher education institute from India found place among top 100 reputed universities of the world. India’s absence from the list could affect its ability to attract globally reputed faculty. Obviously, scoring a high rank is important since otherwise we are going to lose good students. Another important thing is that the ranking is an evaluation of how our education system is performing.  A higher rank will help Indian institution to become a prefer education destination around the world.
- Arindam Garai, Regional College Of Management Autonomous, Bhubaneswar.

Few of Indian institutes are of global repute. Majority of the institutes require change in education pedagogy, infrastructure thrust, reputed faculty, research environment, radical shift from the past. In India, we have to model our institute of the line of institute of global excellence. We should work on all those criteria on which an institute is ranked. Then only we can feature among top institute.
- Nilaya Mitash Shanker, IIT Roorkee

Having global reputation will help the institutes to improve the quality of education in terms of research works, better placements and better work environment. Moreover, the scholarship schemes will attract domestic as well as foreign students to study. Institutes will have lots of course curriculums with specialization in vast areas where students will find ample opportunities to study in their relevant fields and excel in their career growth. Also globally reputed institutes will nurture students to have better industry exposure.
- Pratik Bairagi, Regional College of Management (Autonomous), Bhubaneswar.

Although, Indian higher education institutes garner highly qualified students, they fail to create an impact on global level. It becomes utmost important for institutes to have their presence felt worldwide by spreading their activities outside India as well through activities like research publications, drawing offshore faculty and attracting bright students from around the globe. For that, it is essential to maintain conducive environment in-order to generate interest of pupils from different origins. And, only if these institutes achieve global feat would help spearhead prominent institutes.
- Shivam Chhabra, Integral University, Lucknow.
