Blue Ocean Strategy was one of the most relevant and refreshing books I have read in a long while. It captures the essence of operating in uncharted market places with an uncharacteristic simplicity and clarity for a management book.
 
W Chan Kim and Renée Mauborgne researched about 150 strategic business developments across industries, focusing on the "Blue Oceans" or "uncontested market places that have growth potential" concept.
 
The authors stress on the need for "value innovation" and call for companies to focus, not merely on beating the competition, but on identifying new market demands that can be serviced.
 
They make the book even more useful by laying down a practical framework to help tap these Blue Oceans. The book follows a descriptive approach and features several case studies that makes it an engaging read.
 
Blue Ocean Strategy was all the more relevant to me as we operate in a niche space where we are charting new territories with every step we take.
 
It has helped in enabling Cookie Man to draw up distinctive strategies as we go about developing a market for cookies in India. I have used learnings from the book to identify the Blue Ocean strategy for fresh-baked products and also in the franchising business.
