The BOOK that inspired me

I am an avid reader and have been inspired by many books. But of the multitude, two books in particular stand out: the Padumawati of Malik Muhammad Jaisi , a 16th century Sufi poet, and the Bhagawad Gita.

Padumawati is a historical romance between Ratnasen and Padumawati, who are identified as the symbol of union between the soul and God. In the book, Jaisi defines the perfect woman.

While most writers of his time spoke of ethics for the perfect man, he painted the picture of the perfect woman, her beauty, her strength and wisdom, all of which is inspiring. Most Persian writers of the time looked at a way of life removed from dogma, promoting the concept of a universal religion, which I find very interesting.

The Bhagawad Gita is a perennial favourite, one I still read on weekends. My husband Ajay and I have marked 18 out of the 800 verses that we believe have a strong relationship with management and work.

For instance, a verse that says "You must fight for justice. You can't say life is tough and give in" is particularly apt in business, where all too often you come across seemingly insurmountable problems. But you shouldn't give up. I have made a compilation of these 18 verses, which has been published and which I often share with friends and colleagues. The Gita has been my strongest inspiration.
