Following in the footsteps of Harvard University and other foreign schools, the Tuck School of Business (TSB) at Dartmouth, USA, has begun the new year with a strong focus in India, through the launch of the Tuck India Initiative. |
TSB has opened an office in New Delhi, India, under Gautam Mahajan, to service prospective students and Indian corporate leaders and provide information needed to further business education. |
"There are so many highly-qualified Indian students right now that it has become a priority for Tuck to speak with Indian students in their country, and to make a real effort to get the best and the brightest to come to Tuck," said Paul Danos, Dean of Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth. |
Recently, the school has seen an increase in Indian applications and students had gone to TSB sponsored by companies such as Cisco Systems, Hindustan Lever, McKinsey & Co, Schlumberger, and the Tata Group. |
Through the first three application periods for the class of 2008, and with one round left to go, Tuck saw an approximate 14 per cent increase in Indian applications as compared to the total of last year's application rounds, said the dean. |
Indian and American students were equally eligible for scholarships, which were valued between anywhere from $3,000 to a full-tuition scholarship. Indian students are also eligible for up to $56,000 in private and institutional loans, he added. |
"Scholarships are awarded on a case by case basis, and the make-up of each class changes year to year. Scholarships are awarded based on individual need and/or merit, and scholarships and other financial aid assistance like loans are available to every student. The bottom line is that we will help every student who gets into Tuck find a way to finance education," said the dean. |
Of those who received financial aid for the 2005-2006 academic year, in the last graduating class, 45 per cent received institutional scholarships. |
The average scholarship awarded was $14,565. |
Tuck offered only one degree "" the full-time MBA. |
Tuck's five leading areas of study within the structure were accounting, consulting, finance, general management and marketing. Some of Tuck's more popular elective courses included modules on ethics in action, implementing strategy, investments, leadership out of the box, marketing strategy, real estate and supply chain management. |
As a whole, Tuck application numbers were also rising. To date, there has been an approximate 40 per cent increase in applications as compared to last year, demonstrating a growing demand for business education, according to TSB. |
The new class would begin in September, with each class having approximately 240 students. The last batch also secured placements in companies like Johnson & Johnson, |
Lehman Brothers, Bain, Genzyme Corporation, Avaya, Goldman, Sachs & Co. and Deutsche Bank Securities. |
According to TSB, professional experience prior to joining a business school is important because it provided a frame of reference for classroom discussion and allowed students to contribute in collaborative learning environment. |
On average, students had five years of full-time work experience before entering Tuck. |
"However, it is the quality, not the quantity, of an applicant's experience that is relevant in the evaluation process," said Danos. |
"There is no formula for admission to Tuck. We look for academic excellence, leadership at the workplace, the community, or in extracurricular activities during undergraduate studies," Danos added. |
"We seek candidates who have the passion to make a significant impact in the business world and in society", he stated. TSB students came from all over the world, and they joined top global corporations after the TSB course, he claimed. |
Tuck students aspired to be leaders in businesses, he added. Danos pointed out that Tuck had several international initiatives, like its Centre for International Business, modules on field studies in international business, ambassadors programme, Asia and Latin America agents programme, as well as an international recruiting programme. |
"We are among a few that has a required international core course," Danos stated. |
