The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) sensex ended 11.43 points lower at 2985.54 on Tuesday, with technology stocks ending mixed in largely listless trading.
Gainers outnumbered losers 587 to 570, even as around 6.6 crore shares changed hands.
Dealers said although there was some movement in select stocks, investors were waiting for market heavyweights to declare their results before taking fresh positions.

Meanwhile, at the National Stock Exchange, the S&P CNX Nifty index ended 3.70 points lower at 943.50.
Among tech stocks, Satyam Computers, which is expected to report its results on Thursday, finished 2.72 per cent higher at Rs 158.70. The market is awaiting guidance from the company after disappointing results from Infosys and Wipro.
NIIT rose 11.92 per cent to Rs 128.15, gaining 30 per cent in the past two sessions after the company reported it had swung to a profit in the quarter to March, from a loss a year earlier.
However, Geometric Software lost 4.97 per cent to end at Rs 410.10, while Hexaware Technologies dropped 4.18 per cent to Rs 98.95.
HCL Technologies also ended 1.46 per cent lower at Rs 145.10 and Infosys Technologies settled 0.30 per cent lower at Rs 2,922.40 due to selling pressure.
Reliance Industries ended 0.57 per cent lower at Rs 277.50 before its results on Wednesday. Analysts expect the company
