The Sensex opened with a positive gap of 16 points at 6,636, and touched a high of 6,684 - a tad away from all the time-high of 6,696 - in early morning deals. Profit-taking at higher saw the index shed the gains, and slip into negative zone by early noon. After dipping to a low of 6,571, the index bounced back into positive zone in late noon deals. The Sensex finally closed marginally lower (2 points) at 6,618.Advances and declines were evenly matched at 15:15 today. While advancing shares clocked a volume of 77 lakh for Rs 336 crore, declining shares logged a volume of 91 lakh totalling Rs 511 crore.Heavyweights finished on a mixed note. Infosys dropped more than a per cent (Rs 23) to Rs 2,081. SBI was also down more than a per cent (Rs 8) at Rs 648. Reliance was down nearly a per cent (Rs 5) at Rs 536. ONGC was down nearly a per cent (Rs 7) at Rs 826. ITC moved up 0.9% (Rs 12) to Rs 1,341. HLL was flat at Rs 166. ACC moved past the Holcim open offer price of Rs 370 per share, and closed with a gain of over 3% (Rs 12) at Rs 376. Grasim was up Rs 10 at Rs 1,355. Gujarat Ambuja declined Rs 3 to Rs 455.Pharma stocks firmed up on fresh buying. Dr. Reddy's was up 3% (Rs 21) at Rs 732. Ranbaxy added 1.7% (Rs 18) to close at Rs 1,078. Bajaj was up nearly 1.5% (Rs 16) at Rs 1,075. Hero Honda was up 1.7% (Rs 9) at Rs 543. Tata Motors, however, was down Rs 3 at Rs 490. HDFC zoomed 3.6% (Rs 28) to Rs 816. Wipro was up Rs 9 at Rs 703. Zee, Tisco and Hindalco also finished with gains.Textile scrips logged sharp gains today. Century Textiles zoomed 8% (Rs 15) to Rs 202. Arvind Mills advanced 6% to Rs 130. Raymond, Bombay Dyeing, Alok Industries and Indo-Rama Synthetics also moved up 4-5% each.IFCI clocked a huge volume of over 3.43 crore shares today. The stock jumped 14% (Rs 2) to Rs 19.
