Amrit Food, a division of Rs 400 crore Amrit Banaspati Co. Ltd, has launched its tetra pack milk brand 'Gagan' in the western and north-eastern Indian market.

Gagan has aseptic packaging using co-extruded multi layer film that allows shelf life of upto four months without formation of bacteria. The company already has an established poly pouch milk brand in northern India. Gagan will compete with Nestle and Amul products in this segment.

"We can now tap the western and north-eastern markets as the shelf life has increased to 4 months due to tetra pack containers," said A K Tyagi, president, Amrit Food.

The company expects to sell about 3 lakh litres of milk in Mumbai alone in its first year 2004-05. A target of 30 per cent growth has been set for the following year.

Besides Mumbai, Gagan will be sold in Pune and Lonawala areas and Chhattisgarh state. Super stockists and stockists have been appointed there, Tyagi said, covering upto 8000 outlets.

Amrit Foods is the sole supplier of soft serve mix and milk shake mix to McDonald's in India. It also supplies flavoured milk to Mother Dairy.

Amrit Banaspati had in 1968 promoted Amrit Protein Foods Ltd (APFL) to produce soymilk and beverages and the other soy based products. APFL was taken over by Amrit Banaspati in 1991 and converted into the Amrit Food division to produce milk and milk products at a plant in Ghaziabad spread over 20,000 square metres.
