The BSE auto index surged to a high of 3,679 after opening up 34 points at 3,532. The index finally ended up 161 points at 3,660.
Mahindra & Mahindra zoomed 13% to Rs 550. Tata Motors surged 6% to Rs 257.
Bajaj Auto rallied 4% to Rs 664. Maruti Suzuki advanced 3% to Rs 839.
Apollo Tyre gained 9% at Rs 23. Escorts added 6% to Rs 43. Bharat Forge, Ashok Leyland, MRF and Bosch were the other gainers.

The BSE Auto index has surged on the back of higher vehicle sales in the month of April.
The index opened 34 points higher at 3,532. Thereafter it rallied to a high of 3,635, up 137 points from the previous close. It is now up 3.5% at 3,625, up 127 points.

Auto major, Hero Honda reported a 29.5 per cent rise in sales in April owing to better rural sales and servicing network. Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai Motors also saw a 13 per cent rise in domestic and overseas sales in the same period. Mahindra & Mahindra sales grew 36 per cent on the back of robust demand for Xylo.
However, the country's second-biggest two-wheeler producer, Bajaj Auto's total two-wheeler sales, including exports, fell sharply by 26 per cent to 150,252 units, as against 203,930 units in the corresponding period a year ago.
Mahindra & Mahindra has zoomed 11% to Rs 540. Tata Motors has rallied 4.5% to Rs 253. Maruti has gained 3% at Rs 841.
Bajaj Auto has moved up 2.4% to Rs 655, and Hero Honda is up marginally at Rs 1,192.
Escorts, Amtek Auto, MRF, Bosch and Ashok Leyland have also gained smartly.
