Base metals remain weak on global cues

Base metals remained weak and prices fell up to Rs 5 per kg in the local non-ferrous metal market today in tandem with weakening trend at the London Metal Exchange.

Sentiment remained weak as copper dropped for the first time in three days in London on renewed concern that China may curb the real estate market and as the dollar strengthened.

Meanwhile, copper for the three-month contract declined 1.1 per cent to $7,575, nickel by 0.6 per cent to $23,200, zinc by 1.5 per cent to $2,142 and lead by 1.1 per cent to $2,219.50 a metric tonne on the London Metal Exchange.

In the national capital, copper wire scrap, copper wire bar and copper mixed scrap remained under selling pressure and lost another Rs 2 each to Rs 392, Rs 411 and Rs 372, while nickel (4x4) by Rs 5 to Rs 920-924 per kg, respectively.

Zinc ingot, lead ingot and lead imported also traded lower by Rs 2 each to Rs 123.50, Rs 126 and Rs 128 per kg.
