Base metals soften on lower global trend

Base metals, led by copper fell up to Rs 5 per kg on the local non-ferrous metals market today in tandem with a weakening trend at the London Metal Exchange.

Trading sentiment turned weak after copper dropped in London, trimming a weekly gain, as signs of slowdown in the global economic recovery offset expectations of a stronger yuan and a weaker dollar.

Meanwhile, copper for three-month delivery copper fell 1.2 per cent to $6,612 and zinc by 1.9 per cent to $1,840 a metric tonne on the London Metal Exchange.

Marketmen said apart from a weakening trend at the London Metal Exchange, reduced offtake by consuming industries also put pressure on the base metal prices.

Copper wire scrap, copper wire bar and copper mixed scrap enquired lower by Rs 2 each to Rs 355, Rs 374 and Rs 333 and zinc ingot traded lower by the same margin at Rs 122 per kg, nickel (4x4) lost Rs 5 to Rs 874-988 per kg.
