Bargain-buying and short-covering in the recently battered blue chips helped the benchmark Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) Sensex close in the positive territory on Wednesday.

In volatile trading, the market closed with gains as investors bought automobile, public sector units and consumer durables stocks, which were among the biggest gainers during the day.

Select pharmaceutical and metal counters witnessed selling pressure, closing lower. In the BSE Sensex basket, 18 scrips closed higher.

The breadth of the market was also positive, with gainers outpacing losers in the 8:3 ratio.

A dealer at Motilal Oswal Securities said, "There was some bargain buying and short-covering on Wednesday but the sentiment is nervous. The expiry of the current month futures contracts on Thursday is also playing on the investor sentiment."

Brokers said some bargain-buying and short-covering was expected after last week's fall on the back of higher international oil prices, rising interest rates in the US and slowing down of foreign fund inflows.

The Sensex hit a high of 6,400.07 points and a low of 6,321.31 in intra-day trades, before closing at 6,381.40, up 13.54 points (0.21 per cent) from Tuesday's close.

Volumes were marginally higher than on Tuesday in the cash segment. The BSE reported a turnover of Rs 2,220.11 crore and the National Stock Exchange reported a turnover of Rs 4,256.18 crore.

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) were net sellers to the tune of Rs 1,724 crore on Tuesday, according to figures on the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) website.

But brokers said the figures were higher on account of foreign institutional investors tendering shares for the recently concluded ICICI Bank American depositary shares.

HDFC was the biggest gainer in the Sensex basket, rising 6.75 per cent to close at Rs 735.10, Tata Power up 4.92 per cent to Rs 356.40, Hero Honda up 4.89 per cent to Rs 544.90, State Bank of India gained 3.14 per cent to Rs 661 and ONGC gained 3.06 per cent to Rs 859.20.
