Fish markets across Goa remained closed on Tuesday as a mark of support to the fishing trawler owners' day-long strike against steep hike in diesel prices by the Centre.

The fish markets in Panaji, Margao, Vasco, Mapusa and other cities were shut down and none of the fish vendors turn up for trade on Tuesday. All Goa Fishermens' Federation began the agitation on Saturday opposing the hike in diesel prices by the Central government and demanded a roll back.

"The fish vendors did not turn up to the market on their own. No one was forced," Domnick Fernandes, executive member of All Goa Fishermen’s Federation said.

More than 1,200 trawlers from Goa have already anchored at their respective jetties since Saturday.
