The government has allowed export of 10,000 metric tonne (MT) of sugar to European Union through state-run trading firm Indian Sugar Exim Corporation Ltd.

In July, the government had banned all exports, except those to the EU and US under preferential quota system, until March 2007, as part of measures to curb price rises.

Sugar exports to the EU and US are, however, subject to quantitative ceiling put by the DGFT. The Director General of Foreign Trade has allocated a quantity of 10,000 MTs of white or refined sugar out of free sale portion of 2005-06 season's production for export to EU as preferential quota for 2006-07.

Indian Sugar Exim Corporation, which is the designated agency for export of sugar to EU, will export the commodity, a DGFT notice said.
