Chips are down for blue chips

The BSE Sensex ended in a negative territory today. Twenty one of the 30 scrips comprising the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) Sensex slipped with Infosys Technologies leading the list of losers, down 3.25 per cent to Rs 5,139.85 while BHEL was the biggest gainer in the Sensex basket, up 2.55 per cent to Rs 652.05.
 
The breadth of the market displayed strength with gainers outpacing losers 1,009:733. Selling pressure in blue chip counters dragged the benchmark Sensex down by 0.94 per cent (54.66 points) to 5,783.79. The BSE capital goods index fell 1.83 per cent and the IT sector index was down 1.20 per cent. The Bankex fell 0.58 per cent.
 
On the National Stock Exchange (NSE), S&P CNX Nifty fell 15.35 points to 1,838.20.
 
The Sensex rose in early trades amid optimism at the beginning of the results season. However, selling in blue chips dragged the market lower with selling pressure intensifying in the last half's trade.
 
Analysts said that bellwether Infosys Technologies fell on worries that it could issue cautious guidance on Tuesday due to an appreciating rupee. There are talks that the company will also announce a bonus issue or a stock-split along with its earnings on Tuesday.
 
Wipro fell 0.87 per cent to Rs 1,452 while Satyam Computer was up 1.72 per cent to Rs 315.55.
 
Companies such as Hero Honda Motor, Hughes Software and Mastek announced quarterly results today. Mastek was up 7.15 per cent to Rs 222.40 while Hero Honda Motor fell 1.65 per cent to Rs 504.85 and Hughes Software fell 6.23 per cent to Rs 496.55.
 
Heavyweights Reliance was down 2.03 per cent to Rs 561.40, ITC fell 1.45 per cent to Rs 1,075.10 and State Bank of India was down 0.61 per cent to Rs 619.25.
 
Debutants on the bourses saw action today with the newest entry-Bank of Maharashtra- closing at Rs 38.95, up 69.34 per cent over its offer price of Rs 23 per share. Power Trading Corporation was up 7.26 per cent to Rs 45.05. Players said that short-term investors were exiting and long-term investors have entered.
 
L&T was down 2.01 per cent to Rs 596.25, Gujarat Ambuja Cements was down 1.57 per cent to Rs 306.30 and Grasim fell 1.18 per cent to Rs 1,122.30.
 
ONGC fell 1.40 per cent to Rs 875. Zee Telefilms was up 1.65 per cent to Rs 141.30.
