The Sensex slipped into the negative zone to a low of 18,094 - down 144 points from the early morning high of 18,238. The index is now up 44 points at 18,157.
Weakness, especially in realty and metal stocks have led the fall. The BSE Realty index is down 1% at 3,500, and the metal index is down 0.4% at 15,569.
The NSE Nifty is up 12 points at 5454.
BHEL has gained 1.4% at Rs 2,452, and Reliance Infrastructure is up 1% at Rs 1,143.
Hero Honda, Infosys, Larsen & Toubro are the other prominent gainers.
Profit booking is seen in Wipro, the stock has now trading flat at Rs 416. Earlier the stock was up 4% after posting better then expected results.
Jaiprakash Associates, HDFC Bank and ONGC are down over 1% each at Rs 129, Rs 2,033 and Rs 1,263, respectively.
Market breadth in favour of the declines, 1,536 stocks have declined while 1,288 have advanced.
