According to a paper prepared by P Rethinam, executive director of Asian and Pacific Coconut Community, collaborative efforts by various governments can result in a prescription to fight the dreaded disease.

Research done by US scientists have shown that 63 per cent of coconut oil is composed of anti-microbial medium chain fatty acids and, therefore, can powerfully ally with the immune system.

Coconut oil contains 48.6 per cent lauric acid. Monolaurin the active principle found to suppress the HIV virus. The monolaurin from Cocos nucifera L may cost around $1,000 per year per patient.

Lauricidin tablets made out of coconut oil have been tested against HIV / AIDS Virus with success as per Jon J Kabara, professor emeritus, Michigan State University, US.

The New Zealand Journal of Medicine recently announced that coconut and its products, bring down the viral load in HIV infected patients to undetectable levels.

Eric Tayag, chief epidemiologist of San Lozaro Hospital, Philippines, has explained the role of cocochemicals in the body of HIV patients.

According to him once the HIV enters the body, it attacks the CD4 cells which are the first line of defence against infections and diseases.

Cocochemicals in addition to killing the HIV, increases the production of CD4 cells, and thereby stimulate the immunosystem of the body.

Above findings give value to coconut as a health food or as anti-viral food o as a naturoceutical. HIV-infected patients are advised to consume food containing coconut oil in order to bring down their viral loads.

This is of special importance to HIV infected pregnant mothers as it helps to minimise the transmission of the HIV virus to their babies. Further, lauric acid is recommended to be incorporated into infant milk formulas.

A pilot project to test a large number of AIDS / HIV Virus is to be carried out, for which the scientists of Philippines with the help of medical practioners have formulated a pilot project, seeking funds from donor agencies.
