India's coffee exports rose by 47 per cent to 53,905 tonnes in the first two months of this calender year on the back of decline in production in Columbia, according to the Coffee Board data.
The shipments of coffee during the same period a year-ago period were 36,670 tonnes.
"The exports have risen this year due to rise in global demand coupled with drop in production of coffee in Columbia and other South American countries," Coffee Exporters Association President Ramesh Raja said.
Columbia is a major exporter of coffee. This year coffee production there has declined due to factors like heavy rain, among others, he explained.
"The shipments of coffee to Italy and Germany saw an increase this year," Raja added. Italy and Germany are one of the world's biggest coffee consumers.
Out of total coffee exports during January-February, 47,230 tonnes were normal shipments while 6,675 tonnes were re-exports, the data showed.
During the same period previous year, normal coffee shipments stood at 27,638 tonnes and re-exports were 9,032 tonnes, it showed.
